Description

Hot Rolled Equal Angles, Traditional Angles. All traditional angles are hot-dip galvanised with a heavy zinc coating of 600 g/m2 (R3 durability rating approved)

Hot rolled equal angles, commonly referred to as RSA (Rolled Steel Angle) or angle iron is a versatile low cost, low carbon product suitable for a wide variety of applications. Angles are rolled to 90° with a fillet radius or root radius to reduce stress concentration at the corner. Square root angles with a very small root radius are also available in smaller sizes for less critical applications.

Angles are used extensively in load bearing situations either as the plain product or bolted/welded together (back to back) forming a tee shape, both profiles have a good resistance to bending forces however the section is not suitable for applications that will subject the product to twisting. The outside of the bar in the AR (as rolled) condition has a blue/grey coloured finish, this is known as the surface scale and can be removed by pickling and oiling (P&O) but where a surface finish such as painting is required, shot blasting is more commonly used.

S275 and S355 (available in larger angles) specifications are easily fabricated and machined without the need for high performance tooling. Both specifications have a similar chemical makeup and specifications will sometimes overlap. For S355 material to meet the required standard a minimum tensile yield strength of 355 N/mm² must be achieved, however the minimum yield value reduces as the material thickness increases.

Equal angles are manufactured in the same rolling process that produces all hot rolled long products. Production tolerances range from 0.4 mm up to millimetres on larger sections, but unlike flats, squares and rounds etc. most angles due to their end use are rolled in both 6 and 12 metre lengths with bespoke lengths also available on request.
